The 65-year-old former agricultural scientist will attend a court hearing before South East Suffolk magistrates sitting in Ipswich following the death of his wife Glenda who died from a single gun shot to the chest.
Police discovered her body on Tuesday at the couple's cottage in Lodge Road, Great Bealings, near Woodbridge.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said: "A 65-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of 63-year-old Glenda Walker at her home in Great Bealings.
"John Walker, of Lodge Road, Great Bealings, is due to appear before Ipswich magistrates."
