GARDENERS are today being warned to prepare for a hard winter ahead - despite the current mild temperatures.
So far November's temperatures have been way above the 60-year average for the month.
The average temperature is 9 degrees (48f) but this month temperatures have regularly exceeded 12 degrees.
Another rare occurrence is the fact that November has passed without a frost so far.
Evening Star weatherman Ken Blowers said: "I can't remember a November without a frost and it's extremely rare."
November is also the second month succession that the amount of rainfall has exceeded the average.
The unusual weather conditions are playing havoc with plants and trees, which are being confused by the mild temperatures.
Evening Star gardener Ric Staines said: "A lot of the herbaceous plants are not as dormant as you would expect and if we got a hard frost now they could be damaged."
"Plants are resilient but this climate change could result in us growing different plants in future."
