A YOUNG girl attacked a schoolmate in a fireworks night assault, a court has heard.
The 12-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted a charge of common assault at a hearing at South East Suffolk Youth Court.
She had initially faced a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm, but that was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
The court heard that, after the 12-year-old launched the attack, the victim was set upon by a teenage gang.
David Taylor, prosecuting, told the court that the incident happened on November 3 at Christchurch Park, Ipswich – the night of the fireworks celebrations.
He added that the defendant, who is from east Ipswich, grabbed the girl by the face before walking away.
It was then that a gang of other youths attacked the victim, causing her bruising. The scrap was stopped after adults intervened.
Charles Riddleston, in mitigation, said the fact that she walked away from the incident indicated she was remorseful for her actions.
The defendant, accompanied in court by her mother, was given a three-month action plan order. Magistrates also ordered that £10 compensation be paid to the victim and £20 paid towards prosecution costs.
