Photography students at UCS benefit from state of the art facilities after major investment

Students studying BA (Hons) Photography at University Campus Suffolk (UCS) are benefitting from an investment of over £250,000 in new facilities.

State of the art facilities have been created across two floors that include individual dark rooms, a Mac suite with the latest programs, a large teaching area and a photo finishing suite.

Mark Edwards, Senior Lecturer for BA (Hons) Photography said: “The new facilities mirror what is being used in the industry so we can ensure upon graduating our students won’t be phased by the scale and equipment of what is used. The whole ethos of our course is preparing students with the right skills, experience and passion for a career in photography so it is only right they start by learning in the right environment.”

Steve Macleod, Director of Metro Imaging in London, said “The provision of the new facility to support photographic learning at University Campus Suffolk will provide a dedicated platform that will be fundamental to the growth of the faculty. The course can now offer a state of the art facility where students will be able to investigate, experiment and discuss their learning under one roof; and put into practice many of the skills that will be required as they make the bridge to being industry professionals – having a dedicated hub such as this will formalise the already strong sense of community and belonging at UCS.”

Second year student Charlotte Gardner from Harwich said: “I used the old photography area last year and this year has been so much better. It was a lot nosier and felt busier, now it’s much more peaceful to work in and to concentrate. There’s a lot more space too, with the shared dark room before we used to be bumping into each other as we were in one room all together. Now it’s much better. The course has really been life changing, the facilities are great and you learn so much.”

First year student Jamie Storer from Ipswich said: “From coming to the open day earlier this year to now it is totally different, really good. It’s got the best resources here compared to other unis I visited. The facilities enable me to do better work and there’s the support there if I’m finding something a little bit tricky.”

Fellow first year student Emily Morgan from Bury St Edmunds added: “There’s a lot of space and it’s really cool that you have your own individual pods so you can really focus.”
