A mother has complained about the new surface at Castle Hill play area after both she and her daughter injured themselves.
Emma Flewitt, of Fircroft Road, regularly takes her two children to the recreation area off Congreve Road, but said the new flooring is unsafe.
A fortnight ago, the surface changed from the standard wood chippings often seen in playgrounds to small, sharp pieces of wood.
Mrs Flewitt was the first to be injured when one of the pieces hurt her foot, and then this week daughter Mya fell over and hurt her hand on one of the chippings.
The 31-year-old said: “Within days of the surface changing, I had one of the pieces pierce through the entire thickness of my shoe and into my foot. Then this week my two-year-old daughter fell over while running, and a piece of this wood was sticking out of her hand and had to be pulled out.”
“I’m just glad she kept her head raised because if her face had hit the floor, I have no doubt these wood pieces could easily have ended up in her eye.”
Mrs Flewitt, who is also mum to seven-year-old Caelan, has complained to the council.
A borough council spokesman said: “We regularly inspect all our play areas and the surfaces comply with industry standards.
“We shall continue to monitor the situation and hope Mrs Flewitt’s daughter makes a speedy recovery.”
