VILLAGERS at Trimley St Mary and Trimley St Martin are today praying for the family who lost two loved ones with a third still critically ill in hospital after a horrific pile-up on the A14.

A woman in her 50s was killed in the crash when two 38-tonne lorries collided with a Fiat Punto car near the sliproad to the Trimleys on the Felixstowe-bound carriageway.

Police said a boy – believed to be 15 years old – later died from his injuries in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridgeshire, where he had been taken by the air ambulance.

It is believed the woman and teenager were grandmother and grandson.

The man in his 60s, who was also in the car and suffered life-threatening injuries, is believed to be the woman’s husband.

He is still critically ill and was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by the air ambulance on Monday evening.

Police are still not able to release the names of those involved and are waiting for formal identification and for all next of kin to be informed.

The family is not from Suffolk.

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The driver, from Dovercourt, was arrested at the scene of the crash, which happened about 1.50pm on Monday, and questioned at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.

He will return to police again on October 16.

The crash has left the villages of Trimley St Martin and Trimley St Mary deeply shocked.

Vicar of the Trimleys, Rev Val White said the accident would hit home hard with many people because it was a road they used every day to travel to work, shop, meet friends and so on.

“We were coming back from Essex and saw on the overhead signs that there were delays and there had been an incident and so we came off the A14 and used the Levington link road,” she said.

“It is an absolute tragedy, a very sad thing to happen.

“Prayers will be said at our service on Sunday and we will be thinking especially about the wider family because the effects will rebound on an on and affect so many people.”

Villagers say the stretch of road has not seen many accidents in the past 25 years since the underpass beneath the old roundabout was built to improve safety.
