LAND ownership problems which stopped work on a new 20million academy are set to be resolved today.

For the Academies Enterprise Trust, which runs Felixstowe Academy, it is great news – and means it can immediately get on with the building of its new school.

Negotiations have been taking place between county council and government officials throughout the summer to try to get the land transferred back to the council.

Construction had started on the new access road off Walton High Street at Felixstowe, but all work stopped when it was discovered the site on which the new government-funded school is to be built was not in the council’s ownership.

The school will be built on Felixstowe Academy’s Maidstone Campus, owned by Felixstowe Learning Trust, which ran Orwell and Deben High until the schools closed last year.

It is understood ownership of the land remained with the learning trust, but when the trust’s bid to run the new academy failed, the property was handed over to the Crown.

County councillor John Goodwin said talks with Whitehall had progressed well.

“The documents have all been signed by the government department and there has been a firm undertaking by Company House that the registrar would complete the proceedings as soon as possible,” he said.

“We understand it should be before the registrar by the end of the week and the academy can then start work on site.”

It is hoped all works can be completed within a year, and that students can move in next September, or January 2014 at the latest.
