CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Trimley railway station’s building have today launched their drive to raise 250,000 to create a new community facility.

Rail bosses have agreed to give the Trimley Station Community Trust time to see if they can raise the funds for the project – which could see the building turned into a cafe, information centre, offices and meeting room.

The Big Event was held at the weekend to give villagers the opportunity to find out more about the project and what stage the Trust is at.

As well as talking to residents, there was also a raffle which raised 300 for the group.

Adrian Reynolds, one of the trust’s directors, said: “The event wasn’t about fundraising, it was to make people aware of what we are doing and to try and get support from local businesses as well. It was a really good day and it was well supported.”

The group has been given two years to prove to bosses at Network Rail that their dream of converting the building and bringing it into community use can be realised.

They sprang into action after demolition of the building was threatened by Network Rail. It is believed that it will cost about 225,000 and 250,000 to repair, convert and equip the building.

As well as fundraising events, the trust is looking at other funding avenues, including grants, to reach their target.

Mr Reynolds said he has been encouraged by the response from people in the village so far. He added: “It is a community project for the good of the village and when you explain to people what the alternatives are, they don’t want it to be knocked down because it would be a disaster. I have been very encouraged.”
