A busy shopping precinct was the site of a remarkable wreck as a car mounted the pavement and smashed straight into a storefront.
Police cordoned off the area, in Queens Way, a blue Mercedes travelled a short distance from a parking bay into the shop window, leaving the driver shaken but uninjured.
Eastern Auto Spares director Mike Firman arrived at his shop just after the crash happened at 3.25pm yesterday. He said the automatic car jumped the curb and crashed into the window, adding: “I don’t know whether it was a mechanical error but fortunately there was no damage to the driver or our staff.”
The driver was reportedly in his early 70s and at the shop to have his car battery checked. The vehicle remained stuck in the window while a structural engineer was called to assess the damage.
