ipswich: An MP has today written to bosses at Ipswich Hospital calling on them to make public the improvements made in response to a damning report into their care of the elderly.

In May, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published its report Dignity and Nutrition for Older People, finding the hospital in Heath Road failing.

It revealed incidents of patients left in their night clothes all day, being washed at their beds and staff not washing their hands enough, among the failings.

In a letter sent to Mr Reed this week, North Ipswich and Central Suffolk MP Dr Dan Poulter said he has been contacted by people from all over the county “concerned because they can see that no action is being taken”.

He said: “There is strong support for the dedicated and hard-working doctors, nurses, care assistants, but a great concern that the problems at the hospital are not being addressed.”

He urged Mr Reed to outline the measures being taken “as a matter of urgency” in order to “restore public faith”.

CQC inspectors are expected to revisit the hospital unannounced to carry out a follow-up review, but as yet that has not happened.

A CQC spokesman said: “Since the review we have received regular updates from the trust. A report of any findings in relation to the follow up inspection will be published on CQC’s website in due course.”

Jan Rowsell, hospital spokeswoman, said: “We appreciate Dr Poulter’s comments and we are all awaiting the follow-up assessment but we do not want to prejudice the outcome. Once the visit has happened we will be able to talk openly about the improvements we have put in place.”
