A former Ipswich Town starlet is on a final warning today after being rapped over the knuckles for breaching his suspended sentence.

IPSWICH: A former Ipswich Town starlet is on a final warning today after being rapped over the knuckles for breaching his suspended sentence.

Darryl Knights was told by Judge David Goodin that he will face 43 weeks in prison if he fails to turn up again for unpaid work he must carry out for assaulting two men.

Ipswich Crown Court heard the sleepy-headed striker turned up 20 minutes late to an appointment on November 29 last year because he had overslept.

Prosecutor Juliet Donovan told the court Knights said he had played in a match for Kidderminster Harriers the day before and was so exhausted he did not hear the alarm to wake him up.

After hearing that Knights had made a concerted effort since the incident to comply with the order to do 120 hours of unpaid work, Judge Goodin asked the 21-year-old about his excuse.

Knights, who represented himself, replied: “I overslept that day.”

Judge Goodin then asked Knights: “Is it clear in your mind that oversleeping on the day you are doing unpaid work could end up with you in prison.”

Knights replied: “It won't happen again.”

A further 20 hours of unpaid work were added to the order made against Knights, who had already completed 61 hours out of the original 120. He was also ordered to pay 110 prosecution costs.

Knights' sentence for one count of actual bodily harm and a charge of common assault last June was suspended for 12 months. He had pleaded guilty to taking part in assaults on Martel Adams and James Wells in Ipswich on May 24, 2008.

The incident occurred after Mr Adams insulted Knights' footballing ability and his younger brother, Kyle, who had been seriously injured in a motorcycle crash.

Knights has made a total of 22 appearances for Kidderminster Harriers, who play in the Blue Square Premier.

The striker played in the Harriers' last game, which they lost 2-1, away to Rushden and Diamonds on December 28.

Knights, who lives in Stourton, Staffordshire, left Ipswich Town in 2008.
