The 88-year-old woman was found at an address in Southend at 6.45pm on New Year's Day by officers called to the property, an Essex police spokeswoman said.
Police also found an injured 64-year-old man who was taken to hospital.
A force spokeswoman said that a 34-year-old man from Southend was arrested on suspicion of murder, causing grevious bodily harm with intent, assault on police and criminal damage. He is currently in police custody.
A post mortem examination on the dead woman was due to take place later today.
