FORMER Ipswich Town and England striker Paul Mariner has taken charge of football activities at Plymouth Argyle after a reshuffle of their management team.
FORMER Ipswich Town and England striker Paul Mariner has taken charge of football activities at Plymouth Argyle after a reshuffle of their management team.
Manager Paul Sturrock is to take up a business-support role at the Coca-Cola Championship club.
Mariner, who started his successful playing career with Argyle in 1973, has been back at the club for the last two months working as Sturrock's assistant.
Plymouth are currently second bottom in the Championship table - one place below Town - and three points adrift of safety having lost their last three games.
Chairman Sir Roy Gardner said: "The board has decided to make this move following the continuing poor set of results.
"We are convinced we have the capability to improve our performance and remain in the Championship."
Mariner played under Bobby Robson at Ipswich from 1976 to 1986, when he signed for Arsenal. Prior to joining Plymouth he was assistant manager for New England Revolution in the MLS.
