FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze which broke through the roof of a three storey derelict warehouse.
The fire started in the third floor of the building in Victoria Road, Chelmsford, in the early hours of this morning.
People living in 12 nearby houses had to be evacuated as the roof of the building became completely engulfed in flames.
More than seven hours after eight fire crews arrived, the roof had been totally destroyed and the water board was called in to deal with a burst water main.
Crews also requested building control fearing that the walls of the warehouse could collapse.
