TWO Ipswich teenagers are on bail today after the car they are alleged to have stolen ended up in a ditch pinning a young man underneath.

A blue Nissan Bluebird is said to have been stolen from the north west of the town on Monday and was pursued by police through the streets of west Ipswich.

The drama began just before 2.15am when officers saw a car they believed was being driven suspiciously.

When it failed to stop they began a pursuit which led them through Whitton Church Lane, Norwich Road, Bramford Lane and towards the town.

Police said they chased the Nissan into Jovian Way and Sproughton Road before going past Morrisons and on to the Boss Hall Industrial Estate.

The cars are then said to have gone on to the river path, before returning to the road.

The five-minute pursuit is alleged to have ended near Riverside Road when the Nissan came to a halt down a bank in Tanner's View, trapping a man beneath it.

Around 15 firefighters were called out to free the young man. They had to use a winch and airbag to lift the front of the vehicle before pulling him free.

He was taken to Ipswich Hospital with leg injuries, but was not seriously hurt and released later in the day.

As a result of the incident, a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both from Ipswich, were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including taking a car without consent, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop.

After being interviewed by officers, the pair were released on police bail until November 10.
