ACTOR Patrick Swayze has died after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

The 57-year-old Dirty Dancing actor died yesterday with family by his side.

Swayze found fame in 1987 with his performance as dance instructor Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing.

Fellow film stars have paid tribute to the actor who continued working following the announcement of his illness in March.

The actor's publicist today confirmed he had succumbed to the particularly deadly form of cancer.

Swayze, who was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, Texas, will be best remembered for his starring role in Dirty Dancing and his memorable onscreen romance with Frances 'Baby' Houseman.

Before landing the role he worked as a dancer on Broadway and appeared in TV shows The Comeback Kid and MASH.

In 1990, he starred in Ghost, playing a murder victim trying to communicate with his fianc�e Demi Moore through a spirit played by Whoopi Goldberg.

He recently appeared as Nathan Detroit in the West End production of Guys and Dolls opposite Claire Sweeney and played a cameo role in cult indie movie Donnie Darko.
