PART of a major route out of Ipswich is set to close for up to five weeks over the summer.

A section of Woodbridge Road, between Christchurch Street and Blanche Street, will be closed so that vital reconstruction work can be carried out.

Although the work to the road foundations was due to be carried out last year, this had to be rescheduled due to complications with utility mains.

Last year the same section of the road was closed, which caused heavy disruption to the traffic during rush hour periods.

An Ipswich Borough Council spokesman said: “We had planned last summer to carry out reconstruction work on Woodbridge Road, between Christchurch Street and Argyle Street, however this work was postponed due to potential conflicts with the number of utility mains.

“The plan has now been revised and by using new excavation techniques we have been able to satisfy the concerns of the utility companies and work is due to commence from Tuesday, July 21, and should now be completed within five weeks.

“There was an Anglian Water sewer fault in Woodbridge Road near the junction with Orchard Street, which resulted in a section of the road being closed so the work could be carried out in April last year, but these works are not related.”

Emergency repair work had to be completed when a hole emerged in the middle of the road due to a collapsed drain. The council used the opportunity to carry out much needed resurfacing work on that section of the road.

The closure of the road caused gridlock in the town while investigations were carried out to determine the cause of the subsidence.
