AN elderly Felixstowe couple are still recovering in hospital today after an horrific fire at their home.

Yvonne and Ken Webb were taken to Ipswich Hospital after the blaze at their home in Gosford Way.

She has been hailed a hero after dragging her frail husband out of his flame-filled room and down the stairs, saving his life.

When they arrived at the scene, firefighters found the couple, believed to be in their 70s, in the kitchen of the terraced house as the inferno ripped through the entire top floor.

A hospital spokeswoman said the couple were both “improving” but no decision had yet been made on when they would be released.

Because of the damage to their house, it is highly unlikely they will be able to go home and may be found accommodation in a sheltered complex for the elderly.

A Suffolk County Council spokesman said relatives were welcome to contact the social care helpline to see if the couple were eligible for help from the authority.

Even if they were not, the council would be able to put them in touch with a host of organisations who would be able to help them in other ways.

The fire is believed to have started from a TV in Mr Webb's bedroom after he fell asleep. He is understood to not be very mobile because of arthritis and the couple sometimes sleep in separate rooms because his condition makes him restless at night.

His wife was awoken by the smoke alarm and immediately went to help him.

Seventeen firefighters from Ipswich and Felixstowe spent three hours bringing the blaze under control.
