The attack happened at a bus stop in west Croydon, south London and police said the 26-year-old had been involved in a row with a second man.
The victim's wife had given birth to a son just hours before. His three-year-old daughter who was with him at the time was not injured.
Police now want to speak to two teenage boys who were at the bus stop when the attack happened at around 6.15pm yesterday.
A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody at a south London police station.
The attack took place close to a bus stop outside a Lidl supermarket, a short distance from West Croydon railway station.
