The top three floors of an Ipswich block of flats have been evacuated after they were deemed unsafe in the event of a fire.

Parts of Cardinal Lofts in Foundry Lane were issued a prohibition notice today, November 15, by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service - meaning access to the flats is being restricted due to a fire risk.

The prohibition notice was issued despite the management company implementing improvements, including installing a new fire alarm.

The notice covers 15 flats on floors seven to nine and does not impact the rest of the property.

A ‘waking watch’ is in place for the rest of the building - meaning there will be personnel on-site to give other residents fire warnings.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is working closely with Grey GR, the management company of Cardinal Lofts to help ensure the safety of residents in the event of a fire.

Temporary housing for those affected is being organised by Grey GR assisted by partner agencies including Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk’s Joint Emergency Planning Unit.

Area manager for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Toby Gray said: “Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of Cardinal Lofts residents in the event of a fire.

“As part of ongoing work, we have raised fire concerns and advised how the building’s management company can resolve them.

“This mitigation has not adequately addressed the risks posed to the upper three floors of the property, so it is in the best interest of residents in these apartments to be temporarily rehoused as a precautionary measure.

“We will continue to work with the management company to find a resolution. All Cardinal Lofts residents are being kept informed of progress.”
