A newborn baby was in safe hands after a part-time goalkeeper helped deliver them safely in a hospital car park days after starting his new job.

Joshua Hender had only been an ambulance care assistant at E-zec Medical for a few days before having to deliver the baby in Ipswich Hospital car park.

The 30-year-old from Ipswich said it was a "pretty cool" way to start off his new career.

Mr Hender said: "I was sitting in the ambulance with my partner Andy and suddenly a car pulled up in front of us with a man frantically running out and shouting for help.

"We jumped out and Andy and the dad went into the building to get assistance and I stayed with the mother, but quickly realised the baby was coming.

"I just sort of naturally clicked into action and I knew I had to make sure the baby was warm and alright and breathing.

"It all happened very quickly but I just acted how you are trained to under pressure. You're not trained for those situations but you are for high-pressured situations."

Mr Hender currently plays as a goalkeeper for Kitchener Football Club, who have almost 15,000 subscribers on YouTube.

He continued: "I have three kids of my own, but to be the first person to touch and hold a baby coming into the world, is really quite a special thing.

"I remember looking down and having the baby in my hands and just thinking 'all right, that just happened'.

"It was an amazing thing to be part of."

Mr Hender said that within minutes, assistance was on hand to help the baby and mother, who informed the hospital and Mr Hender that they are all doing well.

He continued: "I am glad they are both doing well, to hear that was enough for me.

"It is definitely a day I'll never forget."
