A man has been charged in connection with two serious sexual assaults by the river in Ipswich.

The most recent attack occurred at about 11.40pm on December 8 near Tower Mill Road.

A teenage had walked in Yarmouth Road and was walking towards Tower Mill Road when she was approached from behind by a man who pulled her to the ground.

The man was then disturbed by a member of public causing him to run towards Riverside Road and Sproughton Road.

The other incident happened last year, between 3.10am and 3.20am on October 17 in the courtyard area of an apartment building - Foundry in College Street. 

A young woman was walking along the waterfront from Stoke Bridge when she was approached by a man who tried to make conversation with her.

As she tried to get away, he chased her into the courtyard area of Foundry where he then assaulted her.

On Thursday morning, officers arrested a 24-year-old man. He was taken to Martlesham police station for questioning.

Adiley Pires, of Kensington Road in Ipswich, has subsequently been charged with attempted rape, sexual assault and common assault (in connection with the incident on December 8, 2022) and attempted rape and sexual assault (in connection with the incident on October 17, 2021)

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
