A 35-year-old man who crashed a stolen Ferrari in a residential street in Ipswich has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Police were called to the crash in Lindbergh Road, which also involved a parked black Range Rover, shortly after 7am on April 30 this year, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

On arrival, officers found the driver of the Ferrari had abandoned the vehicle and left.

Following initial police enquiries, Lee Nicholls was located and arrested two hours later, at about 9am.

After attending hospital for treatment, he was taken to Martlesham police investigation centre for questioning.

The Ferrari had been reported stolen to police about 20 minutes prior to the collision from an address in Nacton, where entry was gained to a secure garage.

Nicholls, of Hawke Road, was subsequently charged in connection with the stolen Ferrari and a number of other incidents.

Nicholls admitted aggravated vehicle taking in relation to the Ferrari, criminal damage to a Mercedes, burglary of two sheds with a set of golf clubs and fishing rods and reels stolen from one and a bicycle stolen from the other, burglary of a garage, theft of an ID card and a sat nav from a motor vehicle, theft of a key fob from a motor vehicle, driving without insurance driving without a licence, failing to stop after an accident, failing to provide a breath specimen and assault of a police officer by beating.

Recorder Paul Garlick sentenced him to a two-year prison sentence suspended for two years, a 12-month drug rehabilitation requirement, a Thinking Skills programme and a 40-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge.

In 2019 Nicholls was jailed for 20 months and banned from driving for two years and 10 months after he admitted three offences of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

On that occasion, the court heard that Nicholls had broken into a lorry driving centre in Sandy Hill Lane, Ipswich, and had stolen a metal safe and a variety of tools.

He also stole the keys to a Volkswagen Golf and then used the vehicle to force open the metal gates of the yard.

Nicholls, who was also banned from driving, later tried to move the vehicle and crashed into a police car.
