Rail services on the line connecting Ipswich and London were blocked after a train hit a bird.

Greater Anglia confirmed the incident happened at Manningtree shortly after 1pm on Tuesday.

Posting on Twitter, the rail provider said: "Due to a train having struck a large bird between Manningtree and Ipswich, both lines are blocked due to the driver of the train involved having to leave the driving cab and carry out a visual inspection for any damage to the train.

"The driver is also having to carry out some work on the train to ensure it remains fit for service."

Greater Anglia confirmed about half an hour later that the lines had reopened, though some delays were still expected.
