Ipswich Borough Council has revealed plans to fund a new permanent police presence in the town centre.

The proposals would see two Public Community Support Officers (PCSOs) based in the high street as part of ongoing efforts "to keep the town safe".

The council has chosen to "put our own hands in our pockets" in order to fund the project, using money received from the government's Shared Prosperity Fund.

Cllr Alasdair Ross, portfolio holder for community protection and health, said: "We've been calling for a higher police presence in the town centre and we're very pleased to see this has been stepped up recently.

"But it's still not to the level we require and we believe a permanent presence is needed in order to help people feel safe.

"We know the police have faced cutbacks and that the police and crime commissioner has limited funding.

"So we've decided to put our own hands in our pockets to deliver on what the people of Ipswich want."

Concerns over safety and welfare across Ipswich have been raised in recent weeks - with on edge following the death of 18-year-old Raymond James Quigley who was stabbed to death Ipswich high street last month.

Measures taken by the council have included the recruitment of a community engagement officer to increase police presence, alongside both Conservative and Labour members uniting in a bid to request CCTV funding from the police and crime commissioner (PCC).

Speaking on the latest news, Cllr Ross added: "The two new PCSOs will be dedicated to the high street and shopping areas.

"We hope the PCC will continue to keep a high police presence alongside these two additional officers.

"We've been calling for a greater presence and we know that's what the people want in order to feel safe.

"That's what we're now looking to deliver."
