Suffolk detectives are still working on a series of unsolved murder cases – with one dating back to 1984.

Here are five unsolved cases that police are still appealing for information about.

Sylvia Stuart

Sylvia Stuart was reported missing from her home in Weybread on Friday, June 3, 2016.

When officers from Suffolk police were called it was reported that Mrs Stuart and her husband Peter had not been seen since the previous weekend.

Mr Stuart's body was found close to their home at about 7.15pm on the day police were called.

Officers began a murder investigation and Ali Qazimaj, 43, was subsequently charged and convicted for the murder of both Mr and Mrs Stuart

However, Mrs Stuart's body has never been found and police are continuing to make enquiries to trace her

Karen Hales

Karen Hales lived in Lavenham Road, Ipswich with her fiancé and their 18-month-old daughter.

On Sunday, November 21, 1993 the 21-year-old was stabbed to death in her home and an attempt had been made to set her body alight – in the presence of her child.

On the day she was killed there was at least two inches of snow on the ground and although it was not exceptionally cold, there were few people on the streets.

Darkness fell at about 4pm and Ms Hales and her daughter were alone in the house, her partner having left for work earlier.

She was found shortly before 4.40pm when her parents called at the house and went in through the unlocked front door.

Since her murder the case has been subject to regular reviews but it remains unsolved.

A review of the forensic evidence has been carried out and the findings are subject of analysis to help provide direction to take the case forward.

Doris Shelley

Doris Shelley, 82, died in hospital 11 days after she was attacked at her home in Martlesham, where she was found by a neighbour.

Sometime between 2pm on Wednesday, February 10, 1998 and 12.45pm on Thursday, February 11, a person broke into Mrs Shelley's bungalow – possibly through a bedroom window.

During the burglary it is believed that Mrs Shelley received blows to her head as a neighbour found her the following morning in a dazed and confused state.

A number of people were arrested in connection with the burglary but no charges were ever brought.

A review of the forensic evidence has been carried out and the findings are subject of analysis to help provide direction to take the case forward.

Jeanette Kempton

On February 18, 1989, the partially decomposed body of 32-year-old Jeanette Kempton was found in a ditch adjacent to the B1518 at Wangford.

Ms Kempton lived in Brixton, London with her ex-husband and their two teenage sons.

She was last seen on February 2, 1989 and on that evening she was last seen drinking in her local pub, The Loughborough Hotel, with a man who was known to her.

When she was found over two weeks later she had no personal possessions with her.

The cause of death was strangulation.

A major investigation was launched with an Incident Room being set up in Suffolk but with a computer link to Brixton Police Station.

Officers from both forces undertook enquiries in both Suffolk and Brixton but these, together with huge attention from the press and television, did not find Ms Kempton's killer.

Edna Harvey

Edna Harvey was killed in her home in Finchley Road in Ipswich on Tuesday, August 28, 1984.

Ms Harvey, who was born in 1897, was found by her neighbours, who had gone into her home after seeing smoke coming from her front door.

The neighbours tried their best to reach Ms Harvey but due to the amount of smoke they were unable to save her.

Suffolk police has said that she had been physically assaulted before her bed was set on fire.

Little is known about the movements of Ms Harvey before her death and the general opinion of detectives at the time was the crime was a burglary "that went wrong".

A murder investigation was launched and several known offenders were arrested, but no admissions were made.

Many items were retrieved from the scene and sent for forensic analysis, but at the time this did not present any new leads.
