A flood alert is in place for Ipswich and parts of the Suffolk coast as tides are expected to be higher than usual this afternoon.

The Environment Agency has issued the alert for the areas surrounding the Orwell and Deben rivers for between 1.45pm and 3.45pm on Friday.

It means low-lying areas in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Wherstead, Mistley, Woodbridge and Waldringfield may be flooded during this period.

There may also be flooding to coastal roads in the Pin Mill area.

People are being advised to stay away from risk areas and take care when next to the coast, rivers and marshland.

The Environment Agency said it is monitoring the situation as well as stating that the 3am high tide overnight is also currently forecast to produce a similar flood alert.
