Ipswich Borough Council has approved an application for five new CCTV cameras to be placed in the town centre.

The cameras will be placed around the Town Hall facing the direction of the Princes Street entrance to the building, and another two above the existing entrance to the Ipswich Corn Exchange in King Street.

The approval means that the existing cameras on the Town Hall will be removed and replaced with new ones.

Following the death of 18-year-old Raymond James Quigley in Westgate Street in January, business owners around the town have called for increased CCTV covering the area.

Last year, the council received Safer Streets funding from the Home Office, with Ipswich Borough Council wishing to "maintain a feeling of safety and security in public areas".

These five cameras are part of 26 new CCTV cameras to be installed across Ipswich, with other locations being Tavern Street, Lloyds Avenue, Stoke Bridge, the railway station, the Waterfront and the Buttermarket area.

Last month, following the sexual assault on a teenage girl in an alleyway between St Stephens Church Lane and Upper Brook Street, opposite Buttermarket, there were once again calls for increased CCTV.
