An open letter published by air pollution campaigners has voiced frustrations over a transport strategy that has avoided "making brave decisions to improve quality of life, the Ipswich economy and local health outcomes."

The document produced by Chris Armstrong and Tony Horner of Ipswich CAN (Clean Air Now) is addressed to MPs Dr Dan Poulter and Tom Hunt, as well as Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council.

Campaigners said they "welcome progress on this topic" but "there are a number of issues which are not addressed."

This includes proposals being based on 2011 census data, a lack of focus on commercial vehicles and there being no policy to tackle traffic which "passes through" Ipswich.

The group also highlighted a lack of anything "concrete in terms of funding, timelines or outcomes".

The statement from Ipswich CAN follows the group joining this newspaper and Ipswich Town Football Club in launching the 'Town CAN' campaign - an initiative which seeks to raise awareness of issues caused by poor air quality in the town and to encourage positive behavioural changes to counteract it.
