Plans are underway in Felixstowe to create a new community space for the whole town to enjoy.

It is hoped that the vacant parcel of land in Orwell Road, accessed between the Greenhouse Café and Perfect Kebab House, can be used by groups and clubs in Felixstowe.

A boxing club has already set up premises in the space, with Nicky Taylor’s NDT's Felixstowe Boxing and Fitness Club having moved into a brand-new, purpose-built gym.

“I had walked past it enough times, and I thought it was time that something was made of that space,” said Colin Hill, 56, a security guard from Felixstowe.

Mr Hill continued: “It’s a very large space, and stretches all the way up to the Grosvenor pub.

“We’re hoping to erect marquees and gazebos there, so that the yard can be used by clubs and societies in the community.”

He said the space will be perfect for clubs such as trampolining, bowls, yoga and Pilates. He hopes that the project can collaborate with the events held at the Triangle in Hamilton Road, so that Felixstowe can offer a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy.

Councillor Sharon Harkin, mayor of Felixstowe, said that she and other councillors from both East Suffolk Council and Felixstowe Town Council had visited the yard, and were given a tour by Mr Hill.

“We are always excited to hear of potential new developments that invest back in our community,” she said.

“This project is at its early stages with clearance of the yard underway.  Going forward, with the right resources and Colin’s determination, it could be a welcome addition to our town.”

Mr Hill has set up a GoFundMe to raise funds to clear the yard, and is hoping that the community will pull together to support this new project.
