Suffolk County Council's cabinet member for Ipswich has revealed his support for a future city bid in a move that marks cross-party support for city status.

Speaking to this newspaper, Conservative councillor Paul West said: "I believe that Suffolk deserves a city, and Ipswich with its history stretching back to the founding of our nation, deserves that honour."

"Suffolk is one of the most important counties in England," he added.

"It has a rich history, a diverse and expanding economy, and a growing importance nationally.

"Obviously, any formal bid will depend on there being an invitation for such applications to be made.

"When that time comes I look forward to working with others in taking this ambition forward."

Mr West's comments signal cross-party support for any future bid, with Labour members such as Ipswich's mayor John Cook and parliamentary candidate Jack Abbott already backing the idea.

The statement comes after the County Council's cabinet agreed 20 recommendations earlier this month to help Ipswich 'maximise its potential' - including a pledge of support for a new city bid.

On Tuesday, this newspaper announced it would be supporting the Future City campaign.

The initiative led by Ipswich Central looks to inform people of the benefits of city status - with speculation continuing to mount over whether King Charles' Coronation in May will be marked by a new competition.

Ipswich Star editor Liz Nice said: "I am proud of Ipswich and believe in our county town. That is why we are supporting Ipswich Central and their campaign to make Ipswich Suffolk's first city.

"City status is about pride, positivity and putting Ipswich on the map as a destination for tourism, investment and new businesses.

"We are a historic town and I believe now is the time for us to become a historic city."
