A Suffolk councillor has spoken out on the "blight" and "environmental devastation" of drivers throwing litter out of their windows on major Ipswich roads.

County councillor Christopher Hudson has described people slinging plastic and even bottles of urine out of their windows on the A12 and A14.

He says more should be done to change behaviour and tackle littering.

The issue has been one for the last seven years, with major campaigns urging people to stop throwing litter out of their car windows on the two major Suffolk roads.

The Copdock Interchange was ranked as one of the worst places in the UK for litter in 2017.

Christopher Hudson, county councillor for Belstead Brook, said that more should be done to catch and penalise offenders.

Mr Hudson said: "It has a lot to do with people slinging stuff out of windows along the A14 and A12, a lot of plastic and even bottles of urine. I am shocked and appalled.

"It is a total blight on the Copdock Interchange. I do think we need to have big fines. It is human pollution. Nobody likes it but they do not propose anything. It is pollution and environmental devastation."

The councillor suggested first increasing signs in the area warning not to throw litter out of windows while driving, and then increasing surveillance in the area.

Mr Hudson added: "The safe sell would be to put a sign on the gantry saying do not be a litter bug, do not throw it out of your windows. Secondly, we need a concerted effort to use technology. We could make use of cameras and ANPR.

"There should be a massive fine, and I would go so far as to say imprisonment. I do think it is a behaviour change that is needed but it needs to be brought about by technology."
