The University of Suffolk has spoken after a popular Waterfront bar announced its sudden closure over the weekend.

Cult Cafe, which has been based in the university's James Hehir since its opening in 2013, revealed it would be shutting its doors for the final time on April 1 - citing a difference in strategy between themselves and the UoS.

A post published on the business' social media platforms read: "As the university enters a new chapter of exciting new developments, we find that our paths no longer align and their need for flexibility as their plans unfold means we are unable to take the business forward into a busy Spring and Summer."

A spokesman for the University of Suffolk responded to the news on Monday, telling this newspaper: "The University was advised on Saturday 1 April that Cult intended to cease trading that day.

"We wish the team at Cult all the very best for the future and the University and the Students’ Union are working closely to manage the short-term impact of the closure and to bring forward alternative provision as soon as possible, focusing on the needs of our entire University community."

The news of Cult's closure came as a shock to many, with the announcement seemingly coming out of the blue.

A statement published on social media the night before it ceased trading read: "With great sadness, today the sun sets on Cult.

"Saturday April 1 is our last day.

"Please come down. Say your goodbyes and make one last memory with us."

The business was a popular destination for both foodies and fans of live music, with the Waterfront bar boasting a strong customer-base that quickly developed during its nine years of operation.

It was opened in 2013 by renowned chef Mike Keen, who described it as a "quirky" establishment designed to "feel like someone’s living room".
