A LEGO-loving seven-year-old from Ipswich is "feeling amazing" after being crowned champion in a national competition.

Having been handed a brief to design and build a vehicle, the 7-year-old chose to think outside the box and created a submersible vehicle in the shape of a shark.

"I'm feeling excellent," said Beaumont, who also won a LEGO competition at Aldeburgh Museum a couple of years ago.

"It's amazing because I didn't expect to be in the top 15, never mind finish first.

"Being shortlisted felt like winning for me.

"So when I found out I'd actually won I couldn't believe it."

Beaumont was encouraged by his family to enter after they saw an advert for the competition at the end of an episode of Channel 4's LEGO Masters.

In just four days, the youngster from east Ipswich had designed, built and sent off what would go on to become his winning entry.

"We couldn't be prouder of him," said parents Daniel and Nicole Wilkinson.

"When he found out, there was a lot of screaming and jumping.

"He's so creative and imaginative.

"The time and patience it took him to achieve this is just amazing."

In return for his first place finish, Beaumont received a year's supply of LEGO in the form of £2,000 to spend in the toy company's shop.

"Initially it seemed like he'd picked up enough to be worth £24,000," added Daniel.

"We had to tell him to put some of it back.

"But he got a wide selection of kits that I know he's looking forward to getting started on.

"It's a fantastic achievement and we're all so proud of Beaumont."
