Over the years Babergh council in South Suffolk has developed a reputation for producing indecisive results with no clear winner - and that has continued this year.

What is different this time is that the Greens have emerged as the largest single party on the council - although the grouping of independents is likely to remain a dominant force.

The official, or "Local" Conservatives was depleted and lost its controversial leader when Simon Barrett was defeated in Sudbury East.

He was up against former Conservative colleague Jan Osborne in Sudbury North East and both lost to Labour.

Outgoing Babergh leader John Ward was one of several Conservatives to leave the group after infighting and become Independents after a row about having non-Tories on the council's cabinet.

He retained his seat - but it remains to be seen whether he can form an administration or whether someone else might come in to try to form a "Rainbow Coalition."

One returning character is former councillor Brian Riley who sparked a huge row in 2015 when he emigrated to North Carolina but decided to retain his Suffolk County Council seat.

He eventually had to resign the following year after failing to attend enough meetings - but returned to Suffolk in 2020 because of the cost of medical insurance.

It is expected that over the weekend there will be discussions between various groups about forming an administration - and a coalition involving the Greens, Independents and Liberal Democrats seems most likely.

However the Conservatives seem unlikely to either want to go into a coalition or be prepared to do so because it was disputes about working with other parties that led to their split early last year.
