There are hopes the almost £1million revamp of an Ipswich shopping street could boost the town and help with the launch of a new music venue.

Recently revealed plans for Arras Square located beside the Buttermarket Centre and St Stephen's Church, include new seating, paving, drainage, lighting, CCTV, litter bins, and trees, as well as a new mural.

If the scheme is approved, the works on the £900,000 development should start in the autumn and be completed in 2024.

The revamp can influence a new vibrant venue located at St Stephen's Church, which is set to open for Brighten the Corners Festival in June.

The Grade II-listed church, which is owned by Ipswich Borough Council, is being converted into a live music and community entertainment venue, including a cafe and a meeting place for creatives, students and the wider community, with the ability to host events and exhibitions.

Joe Bailey, director of Sounds East CIC, said that the Arras Square development is a "really positive" project for Ipswich town centre.

He added: "The work, coupled with the launch of St Stephen's Church as a music venue and daytime meeting place means that this area of town will become a more attractive, busy and new destination for people from both Ipswich and further afield.

"We look forward to seeing the project move forward and hope that this design of a public space can breathe more positive life into that area of the town."

Neil MacDonald, leader of Ipswich Borough Council, added: "It’s clear that local people want us to improve Arras Square.

"This scheme will deliver a much-improved space where people can enjoy their surroundings and visit local businesses, including the new music venue at St Stephen’s Church opening in a few weeks."
