Distressed neighbours have spoken of the "awful" moment the body of a two-year-old girl was found in Ipswich, claiming forensic scientists exited the building in tears.

Police were called to a council-run temporary housing unit in Sidegate Lane at about 11.45am on Friday, June 30.

Upon entering the property, they discovered the body of a two-year-old girl. 

On Saturday, officers arrested a 22-year-old man from Bedfordshire and a 22-year-old woman of no fixed abode in Bury St Edmunds on suspicion of murder.

The pair, who are known to the victim, are currently being questioned at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre, where they remain.

A nearby resident said they witnessed at least five police cars and ambulances arrive at the scene in Sidegate Lane.

"When I saw the two forensics vans pull up, I knew something was wrong," they said.

"Two women were doing the forensic investigation and they were red-eyed when they came out."

They also claimed they had spoken to other residents of the temporary housing unit who had young children themselves and said they seemed "really distressed" by the incident.

Another neighbour added: "The police officer who came and asked if my CCTV was working looked like they were tearful too. 

"It's awful, just awful."

Superintendent Jane Topping said Suffolk Constabulary is still establishing the circumstances leading to the death of the child, adding: "Our initial enquiries are underway and these will continue over the weekend. 

“Clearly, such a discovery is extremely distressing for everyone concerned. We’d ask people not to speculate on social media as to the identity of the child or to the circumstances surrounding her death.

"A highly visible presence of officers is likely to continue in the area for the next few days with reassurance patrols.

"These officers are available to speak to concerned members of the community.

"This is a fast-moving investigation and we are appealing to the local community for any information which may aid this investigation."
