Ipswich residents remain baffled after a thief stole a hanging flower basket and then returned to remove his own 'wanted' poster a few days later.

On Friday, July 21, CCTV footage captured the man approaching the Grove Lane property and unhooking the flower basket.

The Ipswich home owner noticed the item had been removed the next day and reviewed the footage to use in a social media appeal to catch the thief.

"It was my mother-in-law's house," said Kara Thurkettle.

"She asked us to share the images online and put a sign up outside her house with his face on.

"He came back a few days later to take it down."

Ms Thurkettle has her own suspicions as to the reasons behind the theft: "My thinking is that he was either selling it on, or was too cheap to buy one for his mum or Mrs."

She added that another hanging flower basket had been taken from nearby Derby Road, but it is not yet known whether the two incidents are linked.

Other Ipswich residents commented on the social media appeal saying they knew of similar incidents in which potted plants and trees had been taken.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: "Police had a report of a theft of a hanging basket from outside a property on Grove Lane in Ipswich that took place on Friday 21 July at about 10.20am.

"Anyone who knows who was responsible should contact police quoting crime reference: 37/44598/23."
