An Ipswich Town fan is undertaking a gruelling 20-mile walk to the Blues' first home game this season in honour of his late sister.

Richard Chandler will leave his home in Colchester at 6am on Saturday to make the start of Town's clash with Stoke City at Portman Road on Saturday.

The 51-year-old has set himself the challenge to raise cash for the Ipswich Town Foundation – a cause his sister, Terri, supported before her death from cancer on June 29.

Ms Chandler, who was 54, was a lifelong supporter of Town alongside her brother, with guests at her funeral asked to wear football shirts in lieu of formal attire.

The former nurse auctioned a selection of her belongings before her death to raise money for the Ipswich Town Foundation, which aims to inspire as many people as possible to get active in sport.

Mr Chandler said of his challenge: "It's a long way and I'll find it hard, but it is all for good cause.

"Terri did a lot of fundraising for the foundation and they do such great work.

"I've had a look on Google Maps and it thinks the journey will take about six hours. I've built in a bit of a buffer, but I'm leaving at about 6am."

Mr Chandler has set up a JustGiving page to raise money ahead of his walk, with the goal to raise £1,000.

He will be meeting his partner and children at the game on Saturday, which kicks off at 3pm, and has also arranged for charity collections bins to be put out before the match.

Mr Chandler added: "Terri raised £1,000 with an auction before and she always wanted to support the foundation. We'll continue the work throughout the year.

"The football club also shared this on social media.

"I'm confident for the game, especially after watching them against Sunderland.

"I'll be wearing Terri's shirt with her name on it at the game, so it will be like she is with me."
