Heavy showers and thunderstorms are set to strike Suffolk this afternoon.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning in response to the wet weather that has been forecasted between 1pm to 7pm today (September 1).

The thunderstorms are due to reach Mildenhall and Eye at their most northerly point and spread across the county to the coastline.

Travel could be affected, as driving conditions might worsen with the spray from other cars and potential hail that might fall.

Flooding to a few homes and businesses is also possible, as well as building damage from lightning strikes.

The Met Office says that it is safer not to drive during thunderstorms, but asks that those who have to drive slow down, use main roads, turn on their dipped headlights, and leave a larger gap between the car in front.

The warning reads: "Heavy showers already developing are likely to become focused across parts of Suffolk, Essex and N Kent this afternoon, with isolated thunderstorms also possible."

Some areas could see between 20 - 50mm of rainfall.
