October will be the final chance this year to visit the World War II tunnels in Clifford Road.

The underground air raid shelter tunnels will be open every weekend this month, before they close for the season. The tunnels will reopen in the springtime next year, when the weather is warmer.

Concealed beneath the playground of Clifford Road Primary School, the three tunnels were a place of safety which many Ipswich residents fled to during the bombings of the Second World War.

The tunnels were sealed in 1948 and forgotten for many years until they were rediscovered in 1989.

One of the tunnels has now been turned into the Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter Museum, which reopened to the public in April this year, having remained closed during the pandemic.

The tunnels will be open every weekend until the end of the month, from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays and from 1pm to 5pm on Sundays.

Tea, coffee and a selection of wartime-themed cakes and gifts are available for purchase.
