A football match in Suffolk was abandoned after only 15 minutes of play on Saturday after a player suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

The Isthmian League game between Felixstowe and Walton United and Wroxham was stopped after Haydn Davis, a midfielder with Wroxham suffered the freak injury following an "innocuous" tackle.

However, the referee decided not to resume the match due to the time needed for an ambulance to reach Felixstowe's AGL Arena in Dellwood Avenue and the further time needed to treat the player.

The medical crews arrived an hour after being called and took an hour treating Mr Davis before taking him to Ipswich Hospital.

Felixstowe manager Stuart Boardley said the decision to abandon was made on the grounds of player safety because nobody knew how long the paramedics would be on site.

He added: "It was just a tackle in midfield - quite an innocuous one really. The player has broken his leg and dislocated his ankle."

He said Mr Davis was given sedatives to ease the pain by the paramedics.

"I spoke to him throughout. He was in good spirits - or as good as they could be in the circumstances.

"He spoke to his partner and parents on the phone while he was on the pitch and the ambulance crews looked after him well and wished him a speedy recovery."

The match will now be replayed in the next three or four weeks and Mr Boardley said although he understood the decision to abandon, it was a shame because of the amount of work ground staff at the club had put in to prepare the pitch as the town had been hit by heavy rain from Storm Babet.

More than 360 spectators were present for the game, which was goalless when it was abandoned.
