Overnight closures of the Orwell Bridge outside of Ipswich will begin tonight while inspections are carried out on the A14.

The westbound carriageway of the Orwell Bridge will be closed this week between junction 58 to junction 56 while National Highways carries out urgent work.

It is understood the road will be shut over weeknights between 8pm and 6am.

Next week, the eastbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 55 and 58 for five nights until December 2.

Simon Oakhill, senior engineer at National Highways in the East Region, said: "We don't want to inconvenience anyone so any road closure is only taken as a matter of last resort.

"Unfortunately, when the survey work on the bridge was carried out in September we lost a number of shifts to bad weather, which is why we need to carry out these remaining elements from next week.

"We are trying to minimise any inconvenience by carrying out this work at night when the road is at its quietest."

Diversions will be in place along the A12, the A1214 and down the A14 to junction 55.
