Police have issued a plea to football fans to cause “no trouble” ahead of one of the biggest games of the season.

Thousands of fans are waiting for this weekend’s derby match between Ipswich Town and Norwich City.

The game kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday, December 16, at Portman Road. The fixture is sold out, with a capacity crowd of just under 30,000 people due to attend.

Suffolk Police have already announced that their operation will be significantly larger than during other matches

Officers will be visible to ensure that fans from both clubs have a safe and enjoyable afternoon.

Detective Chief Superintendent David Cutler, the policing commander for the match, said: “We very much hope that there will be no trouble between the two sets of supporters, but we will deal with this quickly and effectively if any does occur.

“As part of this, we will use all appropriate powers to ensure the vast majority don’t have their day ruined by a very small number.

“We may use dispersal powers if required that will allow us to deal with individuals who are, or who we believe are likely to, engage in anti-social behaviour.”

Ipswich is expected to be extra busy this weekend, not only because of the game but also the Christmas shopping.

Police ask everybody for “extra patience and respect for each other”.

Residents should be aware of a number of road closures and expect some congestion.

There will also be ample parking all around the town for those wanting to go shopping and avoid the football crowds.

Members of the public are encouraged to approach the police if they have any questions on the day. Officers will be on patrol all across the town centre.
