A man has been charged following an attempted robbery at an Ipswich convenience store. 

At about 6.10am on Thursday, a man entered the Premier Store in Reynolds Road in the Suffolk town.

He filled his pockets with items, threatened the shop worker and damaged the shop door before fleeing the scene.

The staff member was unhurt in the incident, a Suffolk police spokesman said.

Later the same day, officers arrested a man and he was taken into custody for questioning.

Mark Ely, of Milton Street in Ipswich, is due to appear at Suffolk Magistrates' Court in Ipswich on Friday after being charged with a string of offences.

The 55-year-old has been charged with attempted robbery, two counts of theft, one count of criminal damage and one count of possession of cannabis.
