As a teenager in 1973 I was taken on a school trip to London to see Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End and was blown away by the musical.

Since then I've seen several other performances - some full shows, both amateur and professional, and a couple of "concert productions." One of those featured the original Jesus, Paul Nicholas.

But I don't think I've ever seen one capturing the sheer drama, energy and excitement of the original as that at the Regent this week.

This production was born at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London - reopening the venue after the pandemic - before going on tour.

And the talented cast and musicians ooze class from the first notes of the overture to the body of Christ on the cross (sorry if that's a spoiler for anyone!).

The three main stars: Ian McIntosh as Christ, Shem Omari James as Judas and Hannah Richardson as Mary are all fantastic.

But as anyone who knows JCS will tell you, the production has to be run through with talented soloists with great performances from Ryan O'Donnell as Pilate and Timo Tatzber as Herod.

The Temple Priests are a stand-out part of this production - coming across as the most malevolent Boy Band you'll ever see. If this lot said "Take That," you'd want to take cover!

There is a grittiness to this production that I haven't seen before - I can see why there is a warning about taking children under the age of 10 to see it.

But overall it is an extremely accomplished - and powerful production.

It should appeal to both those who just like musical theatre and those for whom the story it tells is very important. I can't see either group leaving feeling anything other deep satisfaction for having seen such a great show.
