Signs have been put up as the opening of the new Poundstretcher store in Ipswich town centre nears.

It was confirmed last week that the budget retailer would be taking over the Upper Brook Street unit previously occupied by Wilko, which collapsed last autumn.

Poundstretcher, as well as its sister brand The Pet Hut, will be opening from 10am on Friday.

The retailer, which already has several stores across Suffolk, will be handing out £250 vouchers to commemorate the opening of its latest shop.

Staff have been seen stocking the shelves of the property throughout this week in preparation for the opening, though the front of the store still has Wilko's sign on it.

News of Poundstretcher's arrival has been welcomed by business leaders in Ipswich.

Terry Baxter, chair of Ipswich Central, said previously: "Wilko closing left a big gap on Upper Brook Street, and it is great that it was only left vacant for a short period of time.

"News of this new shop opening shows that, despite of changing shopping habits, retailers are still choosing to commit to our town centre."
