Armed police were called to reports of a man with a machete in an incident in Ipswich.
Officers were called to Dickens Road in the Suffolk town at about 4pm on Thursday after a man was approached by another man, who were both known to each other.
According to a Suffolk police spokesman, one of the men claimed the other was in possession of his mobile phone and asked him to return it.
One of the men allegedly pulled a machete from his trousers, before swinging at the other.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said: "He has then used the machete to smash the windows of the victim’s vehicle and then ran off."
A search for the suspect was carried out, although he was not found.
Nobody was injured during the incident.
