Drivers were faced with severe delays on the A14 after a serious three-vehicle crash closed it in both directions. 

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the crash in the eastbound carriageway on Wednesday afternoon.

When were emergency services called?

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the crash near Stowmarket at about 3.40pm on Wednesday. 

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police confirmed that both carriageways of the A14 had to be closed so that the air ambulance could land. 

What vehicles were involved in the crash on the A14?

Suffolk police confirmed that two lorries and a white Toyota Auris were involved in the crash. 

Was anyone taken to hospital?

The police spokeswoman confirmed that one of the lorry drivers had to be freed from his vehicle by the fire service. 

He was later taken to Addenbrookes Hospital with injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening or life threatening.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer vehicle, the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

"One patient was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment for chest injuries, while another patient was transported by road to Ipswich Hospital.”

Did the crash cause delays on other routes across Suffolk?

A number of other routes across Suffolk became very busy as drivers looked to find alternative roads to travel on. 

There was heavy traffic reported on the B1113 from Great Blakenham through to Stowmarket as well as the A140. 

When did the A14 reopen?

National Highways confirmed that the A14 reopened by 9pm.
