Youngs Transport near Felixstowe to appoint administrators

Youngs Transportation & Logistics, based at Grays in south Essex, has applied to the Insolvency and Companies List to appoint an administrator.

As well as in Felixstowe, the company has operations at Grays, Southampton and Warrington.

The reasons why the company has gone into administration are unknown, along with the number of job losses, though on its website it says that it has been in operation for 50 years and has a fleet of more than 150 vehicles, together with extensive warehouse facilities.

Its website says the firm arranges the transportation of abnormal and obscure loads and dangerous goods, as well as warehousing.

Youngs' Felixstowe depot is based less than a mile from the port, the UK's largest in terms of container shipping, in Dooley Road.

The firm's intention to appoint an administrator comes several months after Magnus Group, one of Suffolk's leading freight companies and a major sponsor of Ipswich Town, made the same move.

The company, which had a large base in Great Blakenham, near Ipswich, had been operating since 1973 and became a huge name in freight services in East Anglia and the rest of the UK over the years.

Several weeks later, it emerged part of the company – including 200,000 sq ft of warehousing space in Great Blakenham – had been sold Ipswich-based logistics firm Hemisphere Freight Services.

However, 75 people were made redundant.

The transportation industry had a tough 2023, with more than 450 companies calling in administrators over the course of the year.

Richard Smith, managing director of the Road Haulage Association, told this newspaper increasing cost pressures were reaching "breaking point" for many hauliers.
